A Superabsorbent Dressing with Multiple Features and Benefits

Cutimed® Sorbion® superabsorber dressings demonstrate their effectiveness in the management of moderate to highly exudating wounds, utilizing Hydration Response Technology™ (HRT). The unique design concept of HRT combines numerous performance factors which aid in promoting ideal healing conditions, making Cutimed® Sorbion® an indispensable dressing for wound management.

This guide explores the effect of Hydration Response Technology™ on wound healing, how Cutimed® Sorbion® superabsorbent dressings work, and the wide variety of Sorbion® dressings to choose the best option to meeting the needs of your patients.

Managing Heavily Exudating Wounds with Cutimed® Sorbion®

Cutimed® Sorbion® dressings are ideal to manage moderate to high levels of wound exudate because they are:

  1. Outstanding in absorption capacity and leakage avoidance with excellent exudate retention performance
  2. Cleansing effect to promote moist wound healing
  3. Comfortable, conformable, and may be used with compression therapy

Patented Design for Maximum Absorption of Exudate

Cutimed® Sorbion dressings have a patented design to allow for the maximum absorption of wound exudate.

On the outside of the dressing, the expansion rim provides even expansion under high saturation, and ultrasonic sealing eliminates adhesives and binders at the edge of the dressing. The polypropylene cover allows for strong resistance against tearing and gives the dressings high breathability.

Within the Cutimed® Sorbion® dressings, the water retaining polymers help to maintain a moist wound healing environment and broaden contact with the wound bed. The fiber matrix that comprises the Cutimed® Sorbion® dressings helps to avoid clumping within the dressing, and provides safe and fast vertical absorption.

These superabsorbent dressings have moderate to heavy absorption capacity, minimize the amount of dressing changes, and reduce the risk of potential skin maceration.

Hydration Response Technology™ (HRT)

Why is This Important?

Wounds heal best in an optimal environment. Effective wound care techniques protect the healing wound within a moist wound healing environment.

A moist wound environment “facilitates autolytic debridement, aids in the reduction of pain, reduces scarring, activates collagen synthesis, facilitates and promotes keratinocyte migration over the wound surface, and supports the presence and function of nutrients, growth factors, and other soluble mediators in the wound microenvironment.” In essence, it keeps the wound site well-nourished.

Thus, the best wound care practices optimize the healing environment. This includes protecting the wound from exposure to pathogens while also keeping it appropriately moist.

A moist wound environment prevents skin cells from drying out. If the environment is too dry, healing skin cells will die before they can successfully close the gap. Dry wounds are also prone to inflammation and irritation.

However, an over-hydrated environment also poses risks and can hamper wound healing. If the wound environment is too damp, whether from seeping exudate or fluids, it can cause problems like potential skin maceration, inflammation, and even microbial infections.

What is Hydration Response Technology™?

Hydration Response Technology™ (HRT) promotes the healing needs of chronic wounds with superabsorbent polymers that form into a soft gel with a moist outer shell once exudate is absorbed. This ensures that there is still moisture on the wound side of the product while excessive exudate is transported away from the wound.

Cutimed® Sorbion® superabsorbent dressings utilize the unique Hydration Response Technology™ to manage moderate to heavy levels of exudate. These dressings feature increased absorption capacity, cleansing, and comfort under compression therapy.

When Used Against Competitors

Cutimed® Sorbion® dressings have up to 44.7% higher exudate absorption capacity than comparable superabsorbent dressings.

Whether horizontal, vertical, or in motion – Cutimed® Sorbion® remains stable, no matter the conditions. Alternative superabsorbent dressings are unstable after exudate absorption, come with the risk of pressure marks, have no uniform exudate absorption, and could cause lifting of the fixation dressing. Cutimed® Sorbion® dressings have no formation of pressure marks by deformation of the dressing, are ideal for use under compression, and provide broad wound contact for effective exudate management.

Cutimed® Sorbion® dressings haves 55% more retention performance1 (on average) than other superabsorbent dressings.

Cutimed® Sorbion® Versatile Product Family

Cutimed® Sorbion® Sachet – The Original Dressing with Value-Added Benefits

Cutimed® Sorbion® Sachet dressings give effective exudate management. They have outstanding absorption capacity and high retention performance. They also protect against potential skin maceration through vertical absorption, which in turn provides time and cost savings through the reduced frequency of dressing changes and therapy efforts.

These dressings are easy to apply, as either side of the dressing can be used. They also are ideal for compression therapy. The outstanding retention performance safely locks in absorbed exudate underneath the compression bandages and gives optimization of the wound healing process.

Cutimed® Sorbion® Sachet dressings have a wound cleansing effect. Soft debridement results in the reduction of fibrinous coatings. They also bind debris and inflammatory factors like matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) safely inside the absorbent core. This minimizes the treatment effort for wound cleansing and creates optimal wound healing conditions.

Cutimed® Sorbion® Border – For Reliable Fixation and Atraumatic Removal

Use Cutimed® Sorbion® Border for high performance exudate management and gentle removal. This dressing is ideal for moderate to excessive exudating wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, oozing laparotomy wounds, pressure injuries, and postoperative wound dehiscence and similar exudating wounds.

Cutimed® Sorbion® Border has gentle fixation due to its skin-friendly silicone border. This dressing has secure fixation due to high tack silicone technology and allows for less dressing changes due to HRT™ enabling prolonged wound rest. Sorbion® Border has reliable fluid retention; it absorbs and reliably retains wound fluids within the superabsorbent core. The dressing removes wound healing inhibiting factors, including bacteria and proteases, and promotes a wound healing environment that supports the body’s own wound healing. Cutimed® Sorbion® Border retains the majority of absorbed exudate, even when used underneath compression therapy.

Cutimed® Sorbion® Dressings Portfolio

Along with Cutimed® Sorbion® Sachet and Sorbion® Border, there are several other dressing types in the Sorbion® superabsorber family to help best meet the needs of your patients.

Cutimed® Sorbion® Sana Gentle dressings are made with an additional wound contact layer made of polyethylene to protect granulation tissue.

Cutimed® Sorbion® Sachet XL has all of the reliable superabsorber qualities of the Sorbion® Sachet dressings, while in a large size. This provides easy application on large wounds and is contourable and conformable to different body parts, providing wearing comfort.

Cutimed® Sorbion® Sachet Multi-Star and Sana Multi-Star dressings have a special circle shape, and this design allows for flexibility for contouring and conformability on all body parts.

Cutimed® Sorbion® Sachet S Drainage is Sorbion® superabsorbers but in a special shape with an especially good fit at the exit points of tubes e.g. in PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) probes, tracheostoma.
