Aspira Peritoneal Drainage System

The Aspira Drainage System is a tunneled, long-term catheter used to drain accumulated fluid from the pleural or peritoneal cavity to relieve symptoms associated with pleural effusion or malignant ascites.

This tube helps drain fluids that build up and may cause shortness of breath or other symptoms. The Aspira Peritoneal Drainage System allows you to drain these fluids at home, eliminating the need for frequent hospital visits.

How Does the Aspira System Work?
The Aspira Drainage Catheter is a flexible silicone tube with several small holes at one end. This end goes into your body where accumulated fluid can enter the tube. The other end of the catheter features a valve that opens to allow the fluid to drain out.

1. Connect the Aspira Drainage Bag to the exterior end of the catheter. This will open the valve.
2. Squeeze the pump on the bag to start the flow of fluid.
3. When the flow stops or the bag is full, remove the drainage bag.
4. Follow the instructions of your healthcare provider.

Do I Need a Prescription for an Aspira Drainage System?
Your doctor or healthcare professional will insert the catheter into your lung or abdomen. This minimally invasive procedure is generally done in a hospital or clinic without the need for an overnight stay. Once the catheter is inserted, your healthcare professional will explain how to care for it, indicate how often to drain the system and address any questions you have.
